July 2005
Advanced-Intermediate Class
Footwork
- Cross Body Lead with:
- ˝ WLT (this is a regular cross body lead) (Abbreviation:
XB)
- on5: forward
- on6: start to turn
- on7: finish turning
- ˝ WRT (reverse-direction cross body lead) (Abbreviation:
XB:rev)
- The equivalent way compared to a regular XB, would be to
do everything one beat earlier:
- (on3: forward)
- on5: start to turn
- on6: finish turning
- on7: step back
- However, the above is hard to lead, because it is
strange to step straight back on7, plus the woman may think to keep
spinning (XB:WLT). This alternative timing is much easier:
- on5: forward
- on6: forward
- on7: start to turn
- on1: finish turning
- 1.5 WLT (this a regular cross body -- “inside”
turn) (Abbreviation: XB:WLT)
- on5: forward
- on6: start turning to left
- on7: finish 1 turn
- on1: ˝ turn more (to face your partner)
- 1.5 WRT (this a reverse-direction cross body -- with “outside”
turn) (Abbreviation: XB:WRT)
- note how this is basically the same as XB:WLT except
that everything occurs one step earlier:
- (on3: forward)
- on5: start turning to right
- on6: finish 1 turn
- on7: ˝ turn more (to face your partner)
Techniques
- Ways to do XB:WRT (Cross Body Lead with Woman Right
(or “Outside” turn)
- Variation #1:
- L-R:R-L:XB:WLT with all hands going over W’s head
- XB:WRT with all hands going over W’s head
- Finish with regular XB:WLT to unwind
- Variation #2:
- L-R:R-L:XB:WLT with L-R staying low and R-L going over
W’s head
- XB:WRT with all hands going over W’s head after
first half turn
- Finish with regular XB:WLT to unwind
- Variation #3:
- L-R:R-L:XB:WLT with L-R staying low and R-L going over
W’s head
- XB:WRT and switch: L-R goes high and R-L goes low after
first half turn
- Finish with regular XB:WLT to unwind
- For Variations #1 - #3, pattern is:
- Variation #4:
- XB:WRT with R-L with hands over W’s head
- Variation #5:
- XB:WLT with R-L with hands over W’s head, then
wind behind her back
- Variation #6:
- Head comb woman with L-R on1 and XB:WLT with hands going
over W’s head
- Variation #7:
- Head comb woman with L-R on1 and XB:WLT with hands
staying by her neck to wrap around her neck
- Variation #8:
- R-R:L-L and hand slips (“murder-suicide”)
- Can also be done as a traveling WRT with switching
places (try out variations)
- Maybe can also be done as a behind back shake hand move?
(I’ll figure that out)
- Try out R-L head comb and man on left side of woman and
XB:WLT (as outside turn) into neck wrap?
- Reverse-Side Dip
- Footwork is same as XB:WLT!
- Lead is very important:
- pull her forward on3 (while man steps back) and on4
somewhat
- turn her and start to release on5 and finish releasing
before on6
- woman should spin 1.5 turns to right and travel in a
straight line. However, man can help her by:
- picking her up around her stomach with Mlhand before she
finishes first turn and help pull her across to your right side and into
you
- on7: push her down into reverse-side dip position (woman
dips by bending on7 foot (Lfoot) and Rfoot goes straight out but with
toes touching floor)
- totally into dip on1 and hold for a moment (during on2)
- on3: woman comes up on Rfoot (normally the “on
6”foot) and spins to left to do same spin as standard XB:WLT
- full timing is:
- on3: Rfoot
- on4: Lfoot
- on5->on1 (counting now as on1) is regular stepping back
on1 with right foot just like finished regular XB:WLT
- the only difference is that the woman should go right
into this “on1” without a pause after “on3”
and “on4”
- on1 woman finishes turn (see above) and go into regular
XB or rotating XB
- Push-pull arm tension technique
- Used for, among other things, a snappier and more
controlled cross body lead
- All push pulls are done on two different surfaces of
hands (shown in class)
- Exercise:
- Standing place with both feet together, do push-pulls
just to rock back and forth
- Standing with WRfoot back behind WLfoot (like position
after stepping on1) do push-pulls
- Real XB: M back breaks on1 right into XB lead position
and then stays there, W back breaks on1 and will stay there as well
- Extra exercise: push-pulls all the way through the salsa
count: 1,2,3,.,5,6,7,.1,2,3,.,then XB
- Push-pull from open position:
- On7, M brings arms up a little and toward his body (this
is signal for woman that a snap back is about to occur and W should
start to tense arms)
- On1, push (snap) back
- On2, pull forward
- On3, push back (so that woman ends up stepping in place,
instead of taking the normal step forward on3)
- On5, pull forward to lead regular XB lead
- Push-pull from closed positioin:
- Same as above, but “pushes” are done with
L-R hands, and “pulls” are done with MRhand around W’s
back
- Woman can “push” off of front top of
MRshoulder with her Lhand as well
- This technique is very useful for rotating XB lead and
simple XB:WLT followed by regular XB
- The technique is used for the second XB lead of the
sequence and allows you to prevent the woman from being to far forward
on3 of the 2nd XB and you can actually “send her
back” into position.
- This creates a much “snappier” look as well
Coming Up:
- Rotating Cross Body Leads
- Cool Move:
- R-R:L-L:XB as reverse direction (1/2 WRT) and man does
toquetea footwork with all hands going over Mhead
- Spin on Rfoot: R-R head comb on2 or on3 and into
L-L:XB:WLT
- Cool Move:
- R-R:L-L:XB as reverse direction (1/2 WRT) with R-R up and
L-L down to end up in hammerlock position
- Cool Move:
- R-R:L-L:XB:WRT with slip hands put keep L-L behind
woman’s neck on 2nd turn and then do what’s left
of the “Double Head Comb”
Routine for July 2005:
- Non-crossed hands XB:WLT with all hands going over
W’s head (or Toquetea with all hands going over M’s head)
- XB:WRT with all hands going over W’s head
- Man Turn through “the window” (2MLT)
- L-R head comb woman and XB:WRT leading by pushing on back
of WLshoulder with MRhand and into neck wrap
- Man should travel back with woman so that they are
standing next to one another and facing the same direction when in neck
wrap
- Reverse previous move by doing oXB:WLT (meaning
cross body lead from opposite side of woman) again keeping hands around W’s
neck (make sure to push woman straight forward on5, and then turn her
starting on6)
- Repeat move two lines above
- Pick up R-L and XB:WRT w/R-L over W’s head and
letting go of L-R
OR
- Pick up R-L and XB:WRT w/R-L winding behind Wback &
WRhand stays on WLshoulder & M grabs it with his Lhand while moving to
L to end up facing same direction as W & to right of W
- Pedro Gomez move
- Push-Pull-Push XB
- Reverse Dip
